Understanding Speech & Language Disorders

Speech

Speech refers to how someone talks. This encompasses speech sound distortions, intelligibility, and motor planning disorders. Common speech articulation disorders in children include distortions of the /R/, /L/, and /S/ sounds.Speech sound errors can be due to physical limitations/weaknesses (tongue, jaw, lips), perceptual issues (hearing loss), or processing difficulties (auditory, phonological.)

Language

Language refers to both how someone understands/interprets language, as well as how a person is able to convey ideas. This area encompasses auditory processing, expressive language, narrative language (storytelling), sequencing, vocabulary, and understanding and following directions.

Pragmatics

Pragmatic language refers to how a person uses language in a social context. This refers to both verbal and nonverbal communication including body language, facial expressions, and voice inflection. Pragmatic language encompasses the area of social competencies and how well a person can engage in conversations, understand social rules and expectations, and interpret the perspective and intentions of others.

Our son began speech therapy with Leslie when he was 5 years old and saw her weekly until he was 11 years old. From the very first session, Leslie’s robust skillset and gentle and caring way coaxed our son from a struggling boy that he was into a confident and self-aware academic and social/emotional learner. Without a doubt, my husband and I are better, more understanding parents to our son as a result of the example Leslie set and the results she achieved.
